Leggings: A Historical Perspective

Look Younger - Beauty & Style

It is difficult to predict the origin of most items of clothing that we wear unless we delve back in to the shelves of time. Most items of clothing have a history attached to them that explains their origins and evolution. Even an article of clothing as commonplace as a typical legging, has a bit of history attached to them

Leggings have been ever-present for centuries now and the use of it can by noted in a multitude of cultures all over the world. The can be found depicted in a lot of arts and sculpture that depicts many days and ages. A close inspection medieval English literature reveals the green leggings of mythical figure and national hero Robin Hood. Robin and his band of merry men dressed in green leggings and matching green tops and ensured leggings of their place in history.

Leggings, due to their high level of comfort and elasticity were part of the battle dress of many armies from across many civilizations. In the Scottish highlands however, they were designed to withstand the mountainous nature of life and the travails that it brought with it. Leggings were also an important part of the attire of Native Americans.

In recent years, cowboys who worked in ranches across the Wild West have popularized leggings by giving them a masculine look. Apart from the look, they served the cowboys in their day to day lives as they protected them from the many cuts and bruises that they would otherwise have encountered during the course of a day. Leggings have been fossilized in many places in Russia and Siberia where people have continued to use them to this day, just as their ancestors and those before them did.

While a designer will be interested in the latest trends, a historian will, curiously enough be interested in the trends that defined how people dressed in various civilizations for nothing reveals their way of life and the travails that they face more than what they wore.
