How Laser Hair Removal Works

Look Younger - Beauty & Style

Today’s in-thing is laser hair removal. Electrolysis is pass and often painful, while other methods are short term and require annoying repeats. But is laser removal suitable for everyone? One important factor should be considered before investing in this expensive and permanent treatment.

The laser beam used in laser hair removal targets the melanin present in hair follicles, which turns the energy from the laser into heat. The heat changes the cellular structure of the hair and quickly “burns up” the hair follicle without pain. Laser treatments cause hair to become thinner or stop growing.

Two things are needed however to do this correctly. The hair and skin must have a minimum color difference because there are extra precautions that are taken before choosing this option. The hair follicle needs to be growing rather than dormant or resting because this is needed to change the follicle’s structure.

Most people can benefit from laser hair removal, though it especially good for people who have coarse hair that grows quickly. While the pubic area and underarms always respond to lasers, the chest, back, and arms can require a varied number of additional sessions to achieve the desired results.

Before scheduling an appointment, people should speak with their practitioner. This is the time to inform the practitioner of sensitive skin or skin disorders, and speak about pre-treatments that may be done prior to the laser treatment to decrease the side effects. However, side effects are mild and consist of pain, swelling, and blistering.

Before going on a beach holiday is a great time for laser hair removal treatments. If you have tanned skin, be prepared to wait several weeks for your skin to return to its normal coloring, since laser treatment cannot be done on tanned skin.

When you speak with your practitioner about your upcoming laser treatment, be sure to inform him of any topical medications that you are taking, since you may have to discontinue them for a period of months prior to your treatment. If you have cuts, blisters, inflammation, or skin irritation on the area to be treated you will need to postpone your treatment immediately. Do your best to stay healthy before your appointment because you will also need to postpone your treatment if you acquire an infection.

Moles, birthmarks, and beauty spots attract the laser’s energy toward them, and should be removed if you are adamant about receiving laser hair removal.
